FAQs

Bicycle Maintenance

Why won't the bike start?

Several possibilities: There is no more hydrogen in the tank and the buffer battery is empty, or the display is broken or disconnected and therefore no longer lights up, or there is an electrical problem with the system (connectors or electronics). In any case, try to switch the bike off and on several times before calling the referring technician.

Can I maintain my hydrogen bike alone?

For the whole classic cycle part (wheels, transmission, brakes, accessories, etc...), it is quite possible to maintain and repair your bike yourself. But for the energy part (hydrogen and electricity) it will be necessary to call upon a specialized technician. For managers of large fleets, a technician can either be trained in-house or made available by PRAGMA.

How do I know what is the remaining range of my bike?

On the display screen, you have a gauge with 10 "bars", so each bar represents ~ 10% of the autonomy of the bike (Ex. if you have a 2l/300bars bike, you have a total autonomy of 100km on average, so each bar represents ~ 10km. If you have three of them left at a time T, then you have enough to travel ~ 30 km)

Are the components of my bike recyclable?

Many of the components of the bicycle (whether mechanical, hydrogen or electrical) are effectively recyclable. For mechanical components, it is advisable to contact local waste collection centres to find out their sorting conditions. And for the whole energy system, it will be necessary to contact PRAGMA industries directly for the recovery of H2 and electrical components.

How do I repair the chain on my hydrogen bike?

It's a classic chain of commerce. If it has broken and it is not too worn, you can buy a "quick link" corresponding to the size of the chain and put it in place of the one that has broken. A piece of advice: make sure that the chain is always clean and well lubricated to avoid this kind of misadventure.

What to do if the bike goes off the tracks?

The type of transmission we mount on our hydrogen bikes limits the risk of derailment very strongly. But if that happens, just put the chain back on the chainring and the single sprocket of the bike, a bit messy but very easy to do. Tip: Make sure your chain is always taut enough. A system acting on the rear wheel axle makes it possible to adjust this tension.

Why do the brakes on the bike squeak?

Usually these squeaks come from the discs and wafers. The discs may be dirty, or a small piece of gravel may have gotten stuck in a stirrup, but most often they are due to the "icing" of the platelets. It is a hard film that forms on the surface of the platelets when they have been overheated. The disc brakes that equip our bikes are very efficient but need a little adaptation if you don't know these systems. To avoid the formation of this icing, avoid continuous braking over long distances, especially downhill, and rather brake by using, and dosing, both brakes simultaneously.

Who do I call if I have a problem with my bike?

You call the service that provided you with the bike (the company, the local authority or the shop) in the case of a rental, or PRAGMA Mobility if you acquired your bike directly from us. You'll have all the information you need to know what to do.

How should I maintain my H2 bike?

The bicycle part must be maintained like any other bicycle. There's nothing special on our bikes about that part. The referring mechanic will explain to you how often you should come in for periodic maintenance, and if you wish to maintain your bike yourself, we will provide you with a sample maintenance plan. There is no specific maintenance to be carried out on the energy part and the referring mechanic will tell you when you need to bring the bike back to diagnose it or carry out the obligatory checks.

Where can I get my bike repaired?

Whether it has been sold or rented to you, the organisation that provided you with the bike (community, company, business or PRAGMA) will give you the contact details of the referring mechanic. Any questions or requests for action should be addressed to him.

Will the hydrogen bike run without a battery?

On models produced until 2019 a small buffer battery is installed, but from 2020 this battery will be replaced by supercapacitors.

Will the hydrogen bicycle strengthen muscles?

The hydrogen bicycle works exactly like an electrically assisted bicycle. You can therefore ride with or without assistance and the level of assistance is also adjustable. But whatever the level, it has been proven that the simple fact of having to turn the pedals, even with assistance, allows the muscles to work.

Can the bike work without assistance?

Like any electrically-assisted bike, the hydrogen bike can actually run with the power off.

Where can you buy hydrogen-powered bicycles?

Today, PRAGMA is the only manufacturer of hydrogen-powered bicycles in the world that mass-produces and markets this type of bicycle. As we do not yet have a distribution network, the only way today (in 2020) is to contact our sales department directly.

Can hydrogen bicycle tires be recycled?

The hydrogen bicycle uses conventional commercially available tires. But at present, the market for recycling tyres and inner tubes is still underdeveloped. You should check with your local waste disposal facility.

Can H2 bicycle inner tubes be recycled?

The hydrogen bicycle uses conventional commercially available inner tubes. But at present, the market for recycling tyres and inner tubes is still underdeveloped. You should check with your local waste disposal facility.

Can the bike lock be broken?

Like any anti-theft device, it is more or less vulnerable. In reality, no anti-theft device is perfectly tamper-proof, but almost all have a security index that only indicates whether it takes more or less time to break into the model concerned. Today, this index is not standardized and manufacturers use their own scoring system. On the other hand, most insurers and FUB sites offer a list of "approved" locks that give an idea of the "strength" of the model you are interested in. Our bike can be equipped with different models of locks that we choose from the best on the market.

Where's the bike's serial number?

For safety reasons this information is only given to the buyer!

Where to park H2 bikes?

H2 bikes park like any other bike. However, we advise you to avoid "wheel clamp" systems which can damage your rims. If possible, use a roll bar or a solid fixed point, ensuring that parking is allowed at this location and does not impede the passage of pedestrians, wheelchairs or strollers.

Does the H2 bike have lights?

The H2 bike obviously has lights as it is a regulatory requirement. These are highly efficient LED lights.

Does the H2 bike have an anti-theft device?

There are no standard locks, but we can equip each bike with a lock chosen from a list of models that we have carefully selected.

How big is the hydrogen bicycle?

We currently have a single "medium" frame size which, thanks to the saddle and handlebar adjustments, is suitable for cyclists between 1.55 and 1.85m tall. For your information, our frame is size 44.

Can my bike be transported with a bike carrier attached to my car?

The bicycle may only be transported on a gutter-type bicycle rack attached to a towing ball. It cannot be transported on a roof rack or a tailgate.

Which lock should I buy?

Every anti-theft device is more or less vulnerable. We recommend either U-models or folding models with rigid segments.

Which bicycle pump should I use?

These are commercially available tires and tubes equipped with "presta" type valves. Any pump adapted to this standard can therefore be used (Note: Current pumps very often have the 3 standard nozzles).

What to do if the bike goes off the tracks?

The type of transmission we mount on our hydrogen bikes limits the risk of derailment very strongly. But if that happens, just put the chain back on the chainring and the single sprocket of the bike, a bit messy but very easy to do.

How do the hydrogen bicycle speeds work?

On the ALPHA model, the transmission is provided by an ENVIOLO continuously variable transmission system. You select the desired development, according to the relief and your ability, using a twist grip on the handlebar, which has the particularity of not having notches. The use of the gears is therefore easy and very comfortable. There is only one sprocket at the output of the system, the development change is entirely internal to the hub.

How do the bike brakes work?

Our bikes are equipped with the most efficient and progressive braking system, hydraulic disc brakes. This system ensures the best possible braking

How do the bike suspensions work?

Our hydrogen bike is equipped with a suspension fork whose hardness is adjustable and which can also be locked to prevent energy loss on steep climbs. There is no rear suspension on our bikes. With the "balloon" tires that our bikes are equipped with, and for road or track use, this equipment is not necessary. We'll find him on the mountain bikes instead.

How does the hydrogen bicycle work?

It is an electrically assisted bicycle, but the energy, which will power the electric motor, instead of being stored in a rechargeable battery as is the case with conventional EABs, is produced directly by a fuel cell powered by hydrogen contained in a tank.

How to charge a hydrogen-powered bicycle.

The tank installed on the bicycle can be filled from a hydrogen station, whose network is gradually being set up, or even from a simple commercial hydrogen bottle (identical to butane or propane bottles) and a suitable flexible hose.

How long does it take to recharge a hydrogen-powered bicycle?

Fuelling up a hydrogen-powered bike usually takes less than 2 minutes!

How fast can you ride a hydrogen-powered bicycle?

Our bike complies with the regulations in force, the engine is limited to 25 km/h. But of course it is possible to go beyond this speed on a slope or by intensive pedalling, but the electric assistance will automatically cut out at 25 km/h.

What are the regulations for hydrogen-powered bicycles?

The standard in force today for electrically assisted bicycles is EN15194. Its main rules are

  • Engine speed limited to 25 km/h
  • Motor power flanged at 250 watts

Prohibition of accelerator devices. Assistance will only be provided by pedalling with the engine cut off when the pedalling is stopped.

Is a helmet mandatory on a hydrogen-powered bicycle?
The type-approved electric-assisted bicycle complies with the regulations of the highway code for mechanical bicycles. The helmet is therefore only compulsory for children up to 12 years of age. However, it is strongly recommended that all users wear an approved helmet.
How much does a hydrogen-powered bicycle weigh?

The current bike weighs 32 kilos, but our 2020 bike will be much lighter.

Does the hydrogen bicycle have an accelerator and can it therefore run without pedalling?

Standard EN15194 prohibits any accelerator device. The assistance is therefore only provided by pedalling.

What is the range of a hydrogen-powered bicycle?

With a 2-litre hydrogen tank at 300 bars, the average assistance is 100 km. But many factors can reduce or increase this average range (weight of the cyclist, assistance management, relief of the course, condition of the tyres, etc.).

Is the hydrogen bicycle dangerous?

Yes, if you don't obey the rules of the road as you would with any vehicle. Having said that, our bikes are homologated and have undergone all the mechanical tests certifying their safe use.

Where can we refuel?

The tank installed on the bike can be filled from a hydrogen filling station, or even from a simple commercial hydrogen cylinder (identical to butane or propane cylinders) and a suitable flexible hose.
